Aurelius Shrike, a shrike, was found dead in berth four of the Down Mail at the dawn halt, struck once from above and behind. The sleeping car was locked at midnight and unlocked at six, and four passengers were inside it. The police have a man already: he is large, he was in the corridor, he owns a dark coat, and every account agrees. That is the whole of what you have been given. Nobody has told you what the train did in between.
